Assertion (A) : CH(3)OCH(3) and C(2)H(5)...

Assertion (A) : `CH_(3)OCH_(3) and C_(2)H_(5)OH` has comparable molecular weight but boiling point of `C_(2)H_(5)OH` is more than dimethyl ether.
Reason (R) : `C_(2)H_(5)OH` forms intermolecular. H-bonding while `CH_(3)OCH_(3)` forms intramolecular H-bonding.

A

If both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

B

If both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.

C

If A is true but R is false

D

If A is false but R is true.

The correct Answer is:
C

Due to the presence of hydroxyl group `(-OH),` there is extensive hydrogen, bonding between the ethanol molecules `(C_(2)H_(5)OH)` . But there is no such Hydrogen bonding in Dimethyl ether (due to absence of -OH group.) So boiling point of Dimethyl ether is much lower than ethanol.

CH_(3)OH and C_(2)H_(5)OH may be distinguished chemically :

Asserion (A): The boiling point of C_(2)H_(5)OH is less than that of H_(2)O though the molecular weight of C_(2)H_(5)OH is more than that of water. Reason (R): C_(2)H_(5)OH molecules are not highly associated through hydrogen bonding as water is
