The correct Answer is:
D

Agrobacterium tumefacines is a gram negative non sporing, motile, rod shaped bacterium, closely related to Rhizobium. It is found commonly on and around room surfaces. The region termed rhizosphere where it seems to survive by using nutrients that leak from the room tissues. But it infects only through the wound-site eithen naturally occurring or caused by transplanting of seeding and nursery stock. It is harmful to plants and useful to scientists for the same reason i.e. it transfers DNA into plants genomes found in soil worldwide. A tumefaciens cause crown gall disease of wide range of dicot (broac leaved) plants especially members of rose family by transferring its own DNA into plant cells. But in laboratory, the ability to move all sorts of genes into plants has made the microbe the standard tool form investigating plant geneties and modifying crops.

Assertion. Agrobacterium tumefaciene is popular in genetic engineering because this bacterium is associated with roots of all cereals and pulse crops Reason. A gene incorporated in the bacterial chromosomal genome gets automatically transferred to the crop with which the bacterium is associated.

Agrobacterium tumefaciens : (I) has earned the name of natural genetic engineer for the bacterium (II) carries a vir gene which promotes insertion of T-DNA into host cell . (III) has been used to transfer genes for RNA interfer- ence in plants

Assertion : - Genetic variability is the root of any breeding programme. Reason :- Entire collection of plants and seeds having diverse alleles for all genes in a given crop is called germplasm collection.

Assertion: Genetic engineering is a quick and reliable technique for producing GM plants but is facing resistance from people Reason :It is facing resistance because it contains bacterial genes which may be toxic and causes allergy

Assertion : Leguminous plants are best preferred for rotation of crops. Reason : They have root nodules which possess nitrogen fixing bacterium Clostridium

Read the following and answer questions from Q.1. to Q.5. given below: Plants having foreign genes in their genome through genetic engineering are called transgenic plants. Genes can be incorporated either through a vector or through direct introduction of DNA. Bt cotton is a genetically modified organism which is pestresistant. It contains gene cry I Ac and cry II Ab of Bacillus thuringiensis. It is used to control lepidopterans, coleopterans and dipterans. Bt cotton can resist cotton bollworm and produce higher yields. Cry gene produces cry protein or Bt toxin. It is an endotoxin which remains as protoxin in plants and converted to active toxin after getting ingested by the insects. Alkaline pH of the insect gut solubilizes the protein crystals, the activated toxin creates pores to the mid guts wall of theinsects which cause them to death. Identify which of the following is not an advantage of GM crops?
