Tetanus is a serious and oftern fatal disease casued by the neurotoxin tetnospasmin which is produced by the gram positive obligate annerboci bacterium Clostridium tetani. Infectionns beings when the bacteriae are introduced into an open or wound where they produce tetamospamsin toxin which blocks messages from the the spinal cord to the muscles forcing muscles to go into servere spasm. Deep puncture wound or those with devitalized (dead) tissue are particulary prone to tetnus infection because the bacillius thrives in an anaerobic environment. Tetanus often beings with mild spasm in the jaw muscles (hence called lock jaw or trismus) , nech muscles and facial muscles. Stiffiness rapidly devlops in the chest, back and abdominal uscles. Immunization against tetanuscan prevent the disease. Therefore a person who has received a cut and is bleeding needs to given antitetanus treatement. Antitetanus immunoglobin gives passive immunity. Tetanus toxiod which stimulates the production of protective antioxin.
