Assertion: Photosynthetically C(4) plant...

Assertion: Photosynthetically `C_(4)` plants are less efficient than `C_(3)` plants.
Reason: The operation of `C_(4)` pathway requires the involvement of only bundle-sheath cells.

A

If both Assertion & Reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

B

It both Assertion & Reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

C

If Assertion is true statement but Reason is false.

D

It both Assertion and Reason are false statements.

The correct Answer is:
d

`C_(4)` plants are those plants that produce, `C_(4)` compound like malic acid or asparti acid as the first stable compound of `CO_(2)` fixation cycle, eg. Maize, sugar cane etc. Theses plants can grow in dense, ropical, forests were there is poor supply of `CO_(2)` because there is internal supply of `CO_(2)`. Also photorespiration is negligible or absent in these plants. So they are photosynthetically more efficient than `C_(3)` plants. These plants show a special type of leaf anatomy called Kranz anatomy. The `C_(4)` pathway shows 2 carboxylation reactions one in mesophyll chloroplasts and the other in bundle sheath. Chloroplasts `CO_(2)` acceptor is PEP and not RuBP and PEP carboxylases is the key enzyem.
