Equal weight of `CO and CH_(4)` are mixed together in an empty container at 300K. The fraction of total pressure exerted by `CH_(4)` is

A

` ( 16 ) /( 17 ) `

B

` ( 7 ) /( 11 ) `

C

` ( 8 ) /(9 ) `

D

` ( 5 )/( 16 ) `

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

Let the weight of CO=weight of `CH_(4)=a g`
Moles of CO =`(a)/(28)`
Moles of `CH_(4)=(a)/(16)`
Total moles `=(a)/(28)+(a)/(16)`
`x_(CH_(4))=((a)/(16))/((a)/28+(a)/(16))=(a)/(16)xx(28xx16)/(44a)=14/22=7/11`
`therefore` Fraction of pressure exerted by `CH_(4)=7//1`
