The alkane with the carbon chain `C-undersetundersetC|oversetoversetC|C-C` could not be named

A

2-methyl isobutane

B

neopentane

C

2,2-dimethylpropane

D

tetramethyl methane

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

The alkane with the given carbon atom is `CH_3-undersetunderset(CH_3)|oversetoverset(CH_3)|C-CH_3` Since it has all the four H in `CH_4` substituted by `CH_3` groups . (a) is correct . Neopentane is the common name for this alkane and so, (b) is correct. The longest carbon chain consists of 3 carbon atoms and so, in the IUPAC system it is (c ). (d) is the incorrect name .

Give the IUPAC names for the following: (i) CH_(3)-underset(CH_(3))underset(|)overset(CH_(3))overset(|)(C )-C-=CH (ii) CH_(2) = CH - CH_(2) - C -= CH (iii) CH_(3)C-=C CH_(2)underset(CH_(3))underset(|)overset(CH_(3))overset(|)(C )-CH_(2)CH_(3) (iv) (CH_(3))_(3)C - C -= C(CH_(3))_(3) Strategy: Alkynes are named in much the same way as alkanes. Unbranched alkynes are named by replacing the -ane of the name of the correponding alkane with the ending -yne. The chain is numbered fo as to give the C atoms of the triple bond the lower possible numbers. The lower number of the two C atoms of the triple bond is used to designate the location of the triple bond. The locationa of side chains of branched alkynes are also indicated with lower numbers.

The alkanes in which there are two single carbon branches on the second carbon atom of the parent chain are called ___ alkanes .

Comprehension # 3 Branched - chain alkanes are named according to the following rules. (1) Longest chain Rule - Locate the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms. This chain determines the parent name of the alkane. (2) Lowest set of locants -The longest continuous chain are numbered by arabic numerals 1,2,3,4....from one end of chain to the other, in such a manner that carbon atom carrying first substituent gets the lowest number. (3) Name of the branched chain alkane - The substituent name and the parent alkane are joined in one word and there is a hyphen between the number and the substituent name. (4) Alphabetical order of the side chains- When two or more substituent group should be listed alphabetically. (5) Numbering of different alkyl groups at equivalent positions - If two different alkyl groups are present at equivalent positions the numbering of the parent chain is done in such a way that alkyl group which comes first in the alphabetical order gets the lower number. (6) Naming of same alkyl groups at different positions - When two or more substituents are identical, indicate this by the use of prefixes di, tri, tetra and soon. Commas are used to separate number from each other. (7) Rule of larger number of subsitiuents - If a compound has two or more chains of the same length, the parent hydrocarbon is the chain with the greater number of substituents. (8) Numbering the complex substituent - Name such as iso-propyl, sec-butyl and tert-butyl are acceptable substituent name is the IUPAC system of nomenclature but systematic name are preferable. Systematic substituent names are obtained by numbering the substituent starting at the carbon that is attached to the parent hydrocarbon. This means that the carbon that is attached to the parent hydrocarbon is always the number-1 carbon of the substituent. In following compound CH_(3)-CH_(2)-underset(CH_(3))underset(|)overset(CH_(3))overset(|)(C)-underset(CH_(3))underset(|)(CH)-overset(CH_(3))overset(|)(CH)-CH_(2)-CH_(3) The correct lowest set of locant is :-

Draw the structures of the nine isomeric heptanes (C_7H_(16)) . Strategy: start with the straight chain isomer (longest chain). Going to a six-carbon chain, a CH_3 may be placed either on C-2 or on C-3 to give two isomers. Starting with a five-carbon chain, either two CH_3 , or a CH_3CH_2 must be added as side chain for a total of seven C's. The two CH_3 may be placed on the same C atom or on different carbons giving a total of four isomers. The CH_3CH_2 group can only be placed on the central C atom. At other points it either lengtherns the chain or reproduces previous isomer. Finally, go for a four carbon chain and three CH_3 's to form the ninth isomer.
