An iron tank contains helium at a pressure of `2 atm` at `25^(@)C`. The tank can withstand a maximum pressure of `10 atm`. The building in which the tank has been placed catches fire. Perdice whether the tank will blow up first or melt. (The melting point of iron is `2235 K`).

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Let `P_(1)=2 atm`, `P_(2)=?`
`T_(1)=25^(@)C=298 K`, `T_(2)=2235 K`
According to Amonton's law equation,
`(P_(1))/(T_(1))=(P_(2))/(T_(2))`
Thus, `P_(2)=(P_(1)T_(1))/(T_(1))=(2xx2235)/(298)=15 atm`
Since the pressure of the gas in the tank is more than `10atm` at the melting point, this tank will blow up before reaching the melting point.
