Coordination compounds in the extraction...

Coordination compounds in the extraction of metals.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The technique of formation of a coordination compound is widely used in the extraction of noble metals like silver and gold. (2) In the extraction of silver, the finely powdered ore is treated with dilute solution of a complexing reagent NaCN which forms a solution cyano complex with silver `Na[Ag(CN)_(2)]` which passes into the solution.
(3) This solution is then treated with more electropositive zinc which displaces `Ag^(+)` from hte complex.
`Ag_(2)S+4NaCNhArrunderset("sodium dicyanoargentate")(2Na[(Ag(CN)_(2)]+NaS`
`2Na[Ag(CN)_(2)]+Zntounderset("Sodium tetracyanozincate(II)")(Na_(2)[Zn(CN)_(4)+2Agdarr`
