B

If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion .

C

If assertion is true but reason is false .

D

If both assertion and reason are false .

The correct Answer is:
C

At cathode there is competition between the following reduction reactions :
`Na_((aq))^(+)+e^(-) to Na_((s)) , E_("cell")^@=-2.71 V`
`H_((aq))^(+) + e^(-) to 1/2H_(2(g)) , E_"cell"^@`=0.00 V
Hence, reaction with higher `E^@` value is preferred and `H_2` is liberated.

While answering these questions you are required to choose any one of the following four responses : If an aqueous solution of NaCl is electrolysed, the product obtained at the cathode is H_2 gas and not Na . Gases are liberated fasted faster than the metals during the electrolysis of an electrolyte.

Statement-I: If an aqueous solution of NaCI is electrolysed, the product obtained at the cathode is H_(2) gas and no Na. Because Statement-II: Gases are liberated faster than the metals.
