Which of the following alkenes is most reactive towards cationic polymerization?

A

`CH_(2)=CHCH_(3) `

B

`CH_(2)=CHCl `

C

`CH_(2)=CHC_(6)H_(5)`

D

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

In cationic polymerisation , carbocations are formed. Greater the stability of the carbocation , more reactive is the alkene. Since the stability of the intermediate cabocation follows the order : `CH_(3)-overset(+)CH_(6)H_(5) gt CH_(3) overset(+)CH_(3 ) gt CH_(3)overset(+)(C)HCl gt CH_(3)overset(+)CHCOOCH_(3)` therefore , reactivity decreases in the same order. Thus, styrene is mots reactive.
