A car is travelling on road at `50kmh^-1`. The driver applies brakes and brings the car to rest. Which frictional force does more work: (a) the force between the wheels and the brakes or (b) the force between the wheels and the road?

Text Solution

a. The force between wheels and brakes does negative work. It is because friction acting on wheels due to brakes is opposite to the displacement of the wheels' rotation.
b. The friction between wheels and road will not do any work if wheels do not slip on roads, because then it will be static friction.
It is due to the negative work done in part (i) due to which vehicle stops.

Assertion : Improper banking of roads causes wear and tear of tyres. Reason : The necessary centripetal force is provided by the force of friction between the tyres and the road.

Assertion: When brakes are applied on a wet road, a car is likely to skid. Reason: Brakes prevent rotation of the wheels, and there is not sufficient friction between the road and the whells.
