Two unequal masses are ties together with a cord with a compressed spring in between.
Which of the following energies is conserved for the system?

A

(a) Kinetic energy

B

(b) Potential energy

C

(c) Mechanical energy

D

(d) None of these

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

Initial KE of the blocks is zero (as both are at rest) and after some time KE of the blocks is not zero (as both are in motion). So KE is not constant but changes. Potential energy of spring converts into KE of blocks such that mechanical energy remains conserved.

Two unequal masses are ties together with a cord with a compressed spring in between. Which one is correct?

Two unequal masses are ties together with a cord with a compressed spring in between. When the cord is burnt with a match releasing the spring, the two masses fly apart with equal

Two cars intially at rest are free to move in the x direction. Car A has mass 4 kg and car B has mass 2kg. They are tied together, compressing a spring in between them. When the string holding them together is burned, car A moves off with a speed of 2//s (a) with what speed does car B leave. (b) how much energy was stored in the spring before the string was burned.

Two carts, initially at rest, are free to move on a horizontal plane. Cart A has mass 4.52 kg and cart B has a mass 2.37kg. They aretied together, compressing a light spring in between them. When the string holding them together is burned, the cart A moves off with a speed of 2.11 m/s.(a) With what speed does cart B leave ? (b) How much energy was stored in the spring before the string was burned ?

Two identical blocks each of mass 1kg are joined together with a compressed spring. When the system is released the two blocks appear to be moving with unequal speeds in the opposite directions as shown in fig. Choose the correct statement -

Two blocks A and B are joined together with a compressed spring. When the system is released, the two bloks appear to be moving with unequal speeds in the opposite directions as shown in figure. Select incorrect statements(s) :

A ball of mass m is projected horizontally with velocity v into the barrel of a spring gun of mass M initially at rest on a frictionless table. The mass m sticks in the barrel at the point of maximum compression of the spring. What fraction of the initial energy of the ball is stored in the spring ? [Hint : Apply energy conservation principal to the system to obtain the maximum work done on the spring which is stored as potential energy of the spring. The spring will be progressively compressed till the two acquire a common velocity]
