The flow of blood in a large artery of an anesthetised dog is diverted through a venturimeter. The wider part of the meter has a cross-sectional area equal to that of the artery, `A=16 mm^(2)`. The narrower part has an area `a=9mm^(2)`. The pressure drop in the artery is 24 Pa. What is the speed of the blood in the artery ?

A

`0.135 ms^(-1)`

B

`0.095ms^(-1)`

C

`0.0125ms^(-1)`

D

`0.1125 ms^(-1)`

The correct Answer is:
B

Bernoulli's theorem for the horizontal flow of blood is
`p_1+1/2rhov_1^2 = p_2+1/2rhov_2^2`
BY equation of continuity
`Av_1 = av_2 " or " v_2Av_1//a`
`therefore p_1-p_2 = 1/2 (rhoA^2v_1^2)/(a^2)-1/2rhov_1^2 = 1/2rhov_1^2[A^2/a^2-1]`
Here `p_1 - p_2 = 24Pa`
`rho("blood") = 1.06xx10^3 kgm^(-3), A//a=16//8=2`
`therfore v_1sqrt((2(p_1-p_2))/(rhoA^2/a^2-a))`
`=sqrt((2xx24)/(1.06xx10^3xx(2^2-1))=0.095ms^(-1)`

A liquid of density 900 kg/m flows through a horizontal pipe that has a cross-sectional area of 1.90 xx 10^(-2) m^(2) in region A and a cross-sectional area of 9.50 xx 10^(-2) m^(2) in region B. The pressure difference between the two regions is 720 xx 10^(3) Pa. What are (a) the volume flow rate and (b) the mass flow rate?

A vessel is divided by a solid partition into two parts of equal volume. One part is filled with nitrogen and the other with carbon monoxide. It may be assumed that the cross-sect.ional areas of the molecules of the two gases are the same. The relative molecular masses of hoth gases are also the same (equal to 28). Finally, the pressures in both parts are the same. After the partition is lifted, the gases begin to diffuse into each other. flow does the amount of each gas that has transferred to the part occupied by the other gas depend on the initial pressures of the gases?

Water is moving with a speed of 5.0 m/s through a pipe with a cross-sectional area of 4.0 cm^(2) . The water gradually descends 12 m as the pipe cross-sectional area increases to 8.0 cm^(2) (a) What is the speed at the lower level? (b) If the pressure at the upper level is 1.5 xx 10^(5) Pa, what is the pressure at the lower level?
