A bar magnet of magnetic moment M(1) is ...

A bar magnet of magnetic moment `M_(1)` is axially cut into two equal parts. If these two pieces are arranged perpendiucular to each other, the resultant magnetic moment is `M_(2)`. Then the vale of `(M_(1))/(M_(2))` is

A

`(2)/(2sqrt(2))`

B

`1`

C

`(1)/(sqrt(2))`

D

`sqrt(2)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

Initial magnetic moment=`M_(1)`
When cut in two parts , magnetic moment of each part `M'=(M_(1))/(2)`
When place perpendicular , effective magnetic moment
`M_(2)=sqrt(2)M'=sqrt(2 xx (M_(1))/(2))`
`:. (M_(1))/(M_(2))=2/(sqrt(2))=sqrt(2)`
