A particle of mass `m` oscillates with simple harmonic motion between points `x_(1)` and `x_(2)` the equilibrium position being `O` its potential energy in plotted it will be as given bellow in the graph

A

B

C

D

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

Potential energy is given by `U = (1)/(2)kx^(2)`
The corresponding graph is shown in figure.

At equilibrium position (x = 0), potential energy is minimum. At extreme positions `x_(1) and x_(2)`, its potential energies are
`U_(1)=(1)/(2)kx_(1)^(2) and U_(2)=(1)/(2)kx_(2)^(2)`
