When electric field is applied between c...

When electric field is applied between cathode annd anode, at pressure of about 0.001 mm of mercury in a discharge tube, following is observed.

A

There is no discharge in the tube

B

A zig-zag thin red spark runs from cathode to anode

C

whole of tube is filled with bright light

D

a fluorescent glow appeared on the glass opposite to cathode

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

It was found that at sufficiently low pressure of about 0.001 mm of merury column, a discharge took place between the two electrodes on applying the electric field to the gas. A fluorescent glow appreared on the glass opposite to cathode.

When electric field is applied, the cathode rays bend towards _____

Two discharge tubes have identical material structure and the same gas is filled in them. The length of one tube is 10cm and that of th other tube is 20cm. Sparking starts in both the tubes when the potential difference between the cathode and the anode is 100 V . If the pressure in the shorter tube is 1.0 mm of mercury, what is the pressure in the longer tube?

The mean free path of electrons in the gas in a discharge tube is inversely proportional to the pressure inside it. The Crookes dark space occupies half the length of the discharge tube when the pressure is 0.02 mm of mercury. Estimate the pressure at which the dark space will fill the whole tube.

the rartio e//m of electron is independent of (a) Nature of cathod, anode (b) Nature of gas of discharge tube (c) Applied voltage (d) Size discharge tube

The cathode rays are produced when a gas at a very low pressure is subjected to an electric discharge .
