Write the conditions to maximise the yield of `H_2SO_4` by contact process.

A

Low temperature and high pressure

B

High temperature and low pressure

C

High temperature high pressure

D

Low temperature and low pressure

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
A

The key step in the manufacture of `H_2SO_4` is catalytic oxidation of `SO_(2)` to produce `SO_(3)` in pressure of `V_(2)O_(5)` .
`2SO_(2)(g)+O_(2)(g) overset(720K,V_(2)O_(5)2"Bar")iff 2SO_(3)(g),Delta_(r)H^(@)=-196.6kJ//"mol"`
The reaction is exothermic , reversible and the forward reaction results in the decrease in volume. Thus , according to Le-Chaltelier's principle the forward reaction shlould be favoured by low temperature adn high pressure .
