[NiCl(4)]^(2-) is paramagnetic while [Ni...

`[NiCl_(4)]^(2-)` is paramagnetic while `[Ni(CO)_(4)]` is diamagnetic though both are tetrahedral. Why?

A

former is in +2 oxidation state while the latter is in zero oxidation state

B

former has two unpaired electrons while the latter has no uunpaired electron

C

former has three unpaired electrons while the latter has four unpaired electrons

D

Both (a) and (b)

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
D

Both `[NiCl_(4) ]^(2-)` and `[Ni(CO_(4)]` have tetrahedral geometry but former is paramagnetic while latter is of diamagnetic nature beuase former is in + 2 oxidation state while the latter is in zero oxidation state .And also the former has two unpaired electrons whhile the latter has no uppaired electron .
