A body moving towards a body of finite m...

A body moving towards a body of finite mass collides with it. It is possible that

A

both bodies come to rest

B

both bodies move after collision

C

the moving body stops and the body moving must have same mass

D

the stationary body remains stationary and the moving body rebounds

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B, C

When the second body is rest, velocities after the elastic collision are given by
`v_(1)=((m_(1)-m_(2))/(m_(1)+m_(2)))u_(1)` and `v_(2)=((2m_(1))/(m_(1)+m_(2)))u_(1)`
it is obvious that both bodies move after the collision. If `m_(1)=m_(2)` then `v_(1)=0` and `v_(2)=u_(1)`. Further `v_(2) ` cannot be zero. So, option b and c are correct.
