What is binding energy of a satellite?...

What is binding energy of a satellite?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The minimum energy required to free a satellite from the gravitatioinal attraction is called binding energy. Binding energy is the negative value of total energy of satellite. Let a satellite of mass `m` be revolving closely earth of mass `M` and radius `R`.
Total energy of satellite `=PE+KE=(-GMm)/R+1/2mv^(2)`
`=(-GMm)/R+M/2 (GM)/R=(-GM)/(2R)`
Therefore, binding energy of satelite `=-("Total energy of satellite" )=(GMm)/(2R)`
