What type of substances would make better permanent magnets , ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic ? Justify your answer

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Ferromagnetic substances make better permanent magnets than ferrimagnetic substances . The metal ions of a ferromagnetic substance are grouped into small regions known as domains and these are randomly oriented . When a magnetic field is applied , all domains are oriented in the direction of the magnetic field . Now the ferromagnetic substance behaves as a magnet . When the applied magnetic field is removed , the magnetic character is retained .
Thus , the ferromagnetic substance becomes a permanent magnet .
This property (of being permanently magnetised ) is not found in ferrimagnetic substances . They lose their magnetic property on heating .
