Hydrogen used in Haber's process is obta...

Hydrogen used in Haber's process is obtained by reacting methane with steam in presence of NiO as catalyst . The process is known as steam reforming . Why is it necessary to remove CO formed in steam reforming when ammonia is obtained by Haber's process ?

Text Solution

Carbon monoxide (CO) acts as a poison for catalyst iron and promoter molybdenum in Haber's process, i.e., the efficiency of catalyst and promoter is decreased . It also combines with Fe to form iron carbonyl , `Fe(CO)_(5)` which interface in the production of ammonia . hence , CO must be removed from the reaction mixture.
