Calculate the 'spin only' magnetic moment of `M^(2+)`(aq) ion (Z = 27).

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electronic configuration of M(Z = 27) is `[Ar] 3d^(7)4s^(2)`
Electronic configuration of `M^(2+)=[Ar]3d^(7)` or
Three unpaired electrons are presem in `M^(2+)` (aq) ion i.e., n = 3. Applying 'spin only' formula for magnetic moment.
`mu = sqrt(n(n+2))=sqrt(3(3+2))=sqrt(15) BM =3.87 BM`
Note : Unit of magnetic moment is Bohr Magnetons (BM).
