Polymerization of ethene to polythene proceeds through free radical mechanism .The initiator used in this reaction is benzoyl perroxide. This mecchanism invovels three steps.
1) Chain initiation : The addition of phenyl free redical formed by the peroxide to the ethene double bond and forms a large free redical .`C_6H_5-overset(O)overset(||)C-O-O-overset(O)overset(||)C-C_6H_5to2C_(6)H_(5) overset(O) overset(||)C-Otounderset("Phenyl radical")(2C_6H_5)`
`C_6H_5+CH_2=toC_6H_5-CH_2-CH_2`
2) Chain propagation : The above formed radical reacts with another molecule of ethene abother bigger sized radical is formed .The repetetion of this sequence takes places.
`{:(C_(6)H_(5)-CH_(2)+CH_(2)=CH_(2)toC_(6)H_(5)-CH_(2)-CH_(2)-CH_(2)CH_(2)),(" "darr),(" "C_(6)H_(5)-(CH_(2)-CH_(2))_(n)-CH_(2)-CH_(2)):}`
