Why is sulphuric acid not used during the reaction of alcohols with KI ?

`H_(2)SO_(4)` cannot be used along with KI in the conversion of an alcohol to an alkyl iodide as it converts KI to corresponding acid , HI which is then oxidised by it to `I_(2)` .
