Preparation of ethers by acid dehydratio...

Preparation of ethers by acid dehydration of secondary or tertiary alcohols is not a suitable method. Give reason.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Only `1^(@)` -alcohols form Ethers on acid dehydration . But not `2^(@)` or `3^(@)` -alcohols.
Reason: In case of `2^(@)` or `3^(@)` alcohols steric hindrance arises. Due to this steric hindrance alkenes are formed but not Ethers.
