Write an expression for a progressive harmonic wave and explain the various parameters used in the expression.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The expression of a progressive harmonic wave is written as `y = a sin ( omega t- ( 2pi)/( lambda)x)`
Parameters `:`
(1)Amplitude (a) `:` It is the maximum displacement of a vibrating particle from its mean position.
(2) Frequency (v) `:` It is the number of complete vibrations made by a vibrating body in one second.
(3) Wavelength (`lambda` ) ` :` It is defined as the distance covered by a wave while it completes one vibration. ( or )It is the distance between two consecutive points in the same phase.
(4) Phase of vibration ( `phi`) `:` The phase of vibration of a vibrating particle gives its state of displacement at a given instant. Itis generally given by the phase angle.
