A stone dropped from the top of a tower ...

A stone dropped from the top of a tower of height 300 m high splashes into the a pond of water near the base of the tower.When is the splash heard at the top given that the speed of sound air is `340 ms^(-1)`. `(g = 9.8 ms^(-2))`

Text Solution

Here, `h = 300m , g = 9.8 m//s^(2) , V = 340m//s `. If `t_(1)=` time taken by stone to strike the surface of water in the pond, then from
`S = ut + (1)/(2) at^(2)`
` 300 = 0+ (1)/(2)xx 9.8 t_(1)^(2)`
`t _(1) = sqrt((300)/(4.9)) = 7.82s `
Time taken by sound to reach the top of tower `t_(1) = ( h )/(v)`
`= (300)/( 400) == 0.88s `
Total time after which splash of sound is heard `= t_(1) + t_(2) = 7.82 + 0.88 = 8.70 s `
