The fission properties of .(94)^(239)Pu ...

The fission properties of `._(94)^(239)Pu` are very similar to those of `._(92)^(238)U`. The average energy released per fission is 180 MeV. How much energy, in MeV, is released if all the atoms in 1kg of pure `._(94)^(239)Pu` undergo fission ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

No. of atoms in 1 kg of pure
`U^(P)=(6.023xx10^(23))/(239)xx1000=2.52xx10^(24)`
As average energy released/fission is 180 MeV, therefore total energy released
`= 2.52xx10^(24)xx180MeV=4.53xx10^(26)MeV`
