Transverse waves are possible in solids ...

Transverse waves are possible in solids but not in fluids wahy?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Transverse waves require 'rigidity' in the medium, solids have rigidity but fluids do not. However, in a liquid surface, the surface tension provides some rigidity and hence, partially transverse waves are possible on a liquid surface, e.g., ripples.

  • This section contains assertion and reason type questions. Each question has 4 choices (1), (2), (3) and (4), out of which only one is correct. Assertion (A) Transverse waves are possible in solids and strings (under tension) but not in fluids. Reason (R) Solids and strings have shear modulus that is they can sustain shearing stress but fluids yield to shearing stress and hence they do not have shape of their own.
