`overset(o+)(NH_(4))` has bond angle identical to `CH_(4)` but `NH_(3)` has different bond angle. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`overset(o+)(NH_(4)), CH_(4)` and `overset(..)(NH_(3))` all `sp^(3)` hybridised. In `overset(o+)(NH_(4))` like `CH_(4)`, there are four bond pairs anf no lone pairs. However, `overset(..)(NH_(4))` has only three bond pairs (bp) and one pair (lp), hence its bond angle is less due to `lp-lp` (lone pair-bond pair) repulsion.
