Perdict the order of decreasing boiling ...

Perdict the order of decreasing boiling points of noble gases
(b) Predict the ordert of decreasing boiling points of the following `H_(2),He,Ne,Xe,CH_(4)` .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The greater the atomic number the greater the number of `e^(-') s` in each atom the greater is the van der Waals forces, the greater the forces between the molecules the higher should be the boiling point
The decreasing order of boling points are
`Rn gt Xe gt Kr gt Ar gt Ne gt He`
Boiling points in `K : 211 gt 166 gt 120 gt 87 gt 27 gt 4`
(b) All are non- polar miolecules but `X` has the greatest van ber Waals forces because it has the most electrons The decreasing order of boiling points are
`Xe gt CH_(4) gt Ne gt He gt H_(2)` .
