Assertion BF(3) is a weaker Lewis acid t...

Assertion `BF_(3)` is a weaker Lewis acid than `BCI_(3)`
Reasoning In `BF_(3)` molecule, back bonding `(ppi-ppi)` is stronger than in `BCI_(3)` .

A

If both `(A)` and `(R )` are correct and `(R )` is the correct explanation of `(A)`

B

If both `(A)` and `(R )` are correct and `(R )` is the correct explanation of `(A)`

C

If `(A)` is correct but `(R )` is incorrect

D

If `(A)` is incorrect but `(R )` is correct

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

In `BF_(3)` the vacant p-orbitals of B-atom coordinates with lp's of F-atom Therefore lp's availability is reduced In `BF_(3)` molecule there is (2p-2p) overlap resulting in stroner `(p pi -p pi)` back bonding Whereas in `BCI_(3)` there is `(2p -3p)` overlap resultig in less stronger `(pi pi -p pi) `back bonding .
