The tendency for catenation is much higher for C than for `Si`.

The tendency for catenation is much higher for `C` than fore `Si`. Due to smaller size and highe `EN` of carbon , honds are stroger . Catenation also depends upon the strength of element-element bond . Since the bond energy of `C-C` bond is very `( 355 kJ mol^(-1))`, C forms long straight chains or barancehd `C-C` chains or rings of diffenergies decrease rapidly dow the group `( narr)` , viz.
`C-C (355 k J mol^(-1)) lt Si - Si ( 200 k J mol^(-1))`
` gt Ge ( 16 k J mol^(-1)) ` and therefore the tendenncy for the catenation decreases in the order , `C gt Si gt Ge gt Sn .
