Accoding to Aufbau principle, as shown in Fig.`A1`,the electronic configuration of element with `n=3` (third period) and group `17` is
`1s^(2)2s^(2)2p^(6)3s^(2)3p^(5) rArr` Total electrons `=2+2+6+2+5=17`
Therefore, the electron which lies in the `3rd` period and `17` group will have `Z=17`. Element is chlorine.
