Why is `CO` combustible and `CO_(2)` non-combustable?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`CO` is combustible because it has a great affnity for oxygen and burns in `O_(2)` to form `CO_(2)`. This reaction is exothermic. `CO_(2)` has no affinity for oxygen and so it is non-combustible. The non-combustible nature of `CO_(2)` makes it a good fire extinguisher.
