Mixture of `(CaC_2 + Ca_3P_2)` filled in container with a hole is thrown into sea or river, so that.
`CaC_2 + 6H_2 O rarr Ca(OH)_2 + C_2 H_2`
`Ca_3P_2 + 6H_2 O rarr 3 Ca(OH)_2 + 2PH_3` or `P_2H_4`
`P_2H_4` cataches fire. The acetylene produces a bright luminous flame which serves as a signal to approaching ship or boat. This is known as Holme's signal.
