Why calcuim cyanamide can be used as a fertiliser ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Calcium cyanamide, `CaCN_2` reacts with atmospheric `CO_2` and moisture resulting in the formation of urea , which further decomposes to give ammonia. `NH_3` is assimilated by plants and that is how calcium cyanamide acts as a fertiliser.
`CaCN_2 + 2H_2O + CO_2 rarr NH_2 CONH_2 + CaCO_3`
`underset (Urea) NH_2 CONH_2 + H_2 O rarr 2 NH_3 + CO_2`.
