Magetic moment of [CoI(4)]^(2-) is 3.8BM...

Magetic moment of `[CoI_(4)]^(2-)` is 3.8BM Using valence bond approach predict the structure of `[CoI_(4)]^(2-)` .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`mu_(s)=3.80BM` corresponds to `n =3`
(As explained in IIIustration 7.15) :. Number of unpaired electrons `=3` Coordination number `(CN)` and oxidation state `(OS)` of `Co` in the complex are 4 and `+2` respectively
`Co(Z =27)implies3d^(7)4s^(2),Co^(2+) implies 3d^(7)`

Since the complex is paramagnetic with `n=3` electron pairing not take place and `Co^(2+)` ion in the complex is tetrahedral .
