Organs of Female Reproductive System

The female reproductive system offers several purposes. The ovaries known as the ova produce the egg cells or oocytes. The oocytes are then hauled into the fallopian tube where fertilization by a sperm might happen. The fertilized egg then goes to the uterus, in which the uterine lining has thickened to the reproductive cycle's hormones in response. The egg can implant into the thickened uterine lining and continue to grow, once in the uterus. The uterine lining is discarded as menstrual flow if implantation does not occur. Additionally, the female reproductive system produces female sex hormones which keep the reproductive cycle.

In the menopause, the female reproductive system slowly stops making the hormones essential for the cycle to function. At this point, menstrual cycles can become abnormal or irregular and eventually stop. One year after cycles ceased, the woman is said to be menopausal.
