Structure of Ovum

This chapter will focus on the structure of the ovum and functions of ovum. The reproductive system is responsible for the reproduction process which leads to the birth of an offspring.

What is the Ovum?

The ovum or the egg cell is a part of the female reproductive system. It has a size  that of a sesame seed where it stores the nutrient materials. Ovum does not have a movement of its own. It is much larger in size than the sperm cells. In the process of fertilization, the ovum fertilizes with the sperm cells leading to the formation of  a diploid cell. Eventually an embryo is formed and it gradually grows into a whole organism in the latter stage.
