A pendulum consists of a wooden bob of mass `m` and of length `L`. A bullet of mass `m_(1)` is fired towards the pendulum with a speed `v_(1)`. The bullet emerges out of the bob with a speed `v_(1)//3` and the just completes motion along a vertical circle. Then `v_(1)` is:

A

`((m)/(m_(1))) sqrt(5gl)`

B

`(3)/(2)((m)/(m_(1))) sqrt(5gl)`

C

`(2)/(3)((m)/(m_(1))) sqrt(5gl)`

D

`((m_(1))/(m)) sqrt(gl)`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
B

Applying the law of conservationof momentum
`m_(1) v_(1) = m_(1)(v_(1))/(3) + mv or v = (3 m_(1) v_(1))/(3m)`
To describe a vertical `v` should be `sqrt(5gl)`
So `(2 m_(1) v_(1))/(3m) = sqrt(5gl) or v_(1) ((m)/(m_(1))) (3)/(2) sqrt(5gl)`

The bullet emerges immediately out of the bob from the other side with a speed of v//2 and the bob starts rising. Assume no loss of mass of bob takes place due to penetration. What is the momentum transferred to the bob by the bullet?

A pendulum consists of a wooden bob of mass M and length l . A bullet of mass m is fired towards the pendulum with a speed v . The bullet emerges immediately out of the bob from the other side with a speed of v//2 and the bob starts rising. Assume no loss of mass of bob takes place due to penetration. A frequently used device to measure the speed of bullets is the ballistic pendulum. It comprises of a heavy block of wood of mass M suspended by two long chords. A bullet of mass m is fired into the block horizontally. The block, with the bullet embedded in it, swings upwards. The centre of mass of the combination rises through a vertical distance h before coming to rest momentarily. In a particular experiment, a bullet of mass 40 gm is fired into a wooden block of mass 10 kg. The block is observed to rise by a height of 20.0 cm. Initial speed of the bullet is
