A bullet thrown with a hand can be stopped eaisly, but it may kill a person when fired from a gun. Why?

When a bullet is fired from a gun, its velocity is very large compared to when it is thrown with a hand. When velocity is large, its liner momentum is large. Therefore, it may pierce through the person and kill him.
