Two object A and B are moving along the ...

Two object A and B are moving along the same straight line in opposite directions with velocities `10m//s` and `5m//s` respectively. They collide during which they stick to each other. If mass of A is `1.5kg` and mass of B is `1kg`, what is the velocity of the combinations?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Here, `v_(1)=10m//s, v_(2)= -5m//s`
`m_(1)=1.5kg m_(2)=1kg`
`v=?`
According to the principle of conservation of linear momentum,
`(m_(1)+m_(2))v=m+(1)v_(1)+m_(2)v_(2)`
`v=(m_(1)v_(1)+m_(2)v_(2))/(m_(1)+m_(2))= (1.5xx10+1(-5))/(1.5+1)=(10)/(2.5)= 4m//s`
As v is +, therefore, the combination moves in the direction of object A.
