Using Newton's law of gravitation, calculate density of earth.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

If p is uniform density of earth taken as a perfect sphere, then `M=(4)/(3)piR^(3) p`
As `g=GM//R^(2) , M=gR^(2)//G`
`:. p=(3M)/(4piR^(3))=(3gR^(2))/(G.4piR^(3))=(3g)/(4piGR)=(3xx9.8)/(4xx22/7xx6.67xx10^(-11)xx6.4xx10^(6))=5.48xx10^(3) kg//m^(3)`.

Newtons law of gravitation

According to Newton's law of gravitation, the apple and the earth experience equal and opposite forces due to gravitation. But it is the apple that falls towards the earth and not vice-versa. Why ?

Based on scientific calculations using Newton's law of gravitational force , it is found that the gravitational pull of the Sun on the Moon is twice the gravitational pull of Earth on the Moon. Then why can't the moon escape the Earth?

Newton's law og gravitation holds good for

Newton's law of gravitation is universal because

According to Newton's law of gravitational, every particle of matter attracts every other particle. But bodies on the surface of Earth never move towards each other on account of this force of attraction. Why ?

A planet having mass equal to that of the earth (M = 6 xx10^(24)kg) has radius R such that a particle projected from its surface at the speed of light (c=3xx10^(8)ms^(-1)) just fails to escape. Assuming Newton’s Law of gravitation to be valid calculate the radius and mass density of such a planet. Are the numbers realistic? Note: The radius that you calculated is known as Schwarzschild radius. Actually we need to use theory of general relativity for solving this problem.

Newton's law of gravitation is called the universal for of gravitation. Why ?
