What fraction of an iceberg lies beneath...

What fraction of an iceberg lies beneath the surface of the sea? Density of sea water `(rho)=1.028xx10^(3)kg//m^(3)`, density of ice `(d)``=0.917xx10^(3)kg//m^(3)`

Text Solution

As `F_B=W`,`rho_wgV_w=rho_igV_i` or `(V_w)/(V_i)=(rho_i)/(rho_w)=(0.917)/(1.025)=0.895=89.5%`
Here `V_w=`Volume of water displaced by the iceberg`=`volume of the iceberg below the surface
`V_i=` Volume of the iceberg
and `rho_i(=0.917(g)/(cm^3)`) is the density of iceberg and `rho_w(=1.025)` that of sea water.
