A nail becomes warm when it is hammered into a plank. Explain why ?

The potential energy of the hammer is transferred to the nail. A major part of this energy is changed into kinetic energy as the nail moves into the plank and the rest is converted into heat. It si due to this heat that the nail becomes warm.
