Why does a current-carrying solenoid when suspended freely rests along a particular direction?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A current-carrying solenoid has a magnetic field exactly similar to that of a bar magnet. As such it behaves like a bar magnet and acquires the directive property, i.e., the property of pointing N-S when it is freely suspended.
