The use of magnetic therapy for pain relief has become increasingly popular in the last few years. Traditional physicians are very skeptical of the benefits of magnetic therapy because of the lack of valid scientific evidence to support its use.
(i) What is the theory behind magnetic therapy?

(i) When a magnet is applied to a body, electric current produced by it flows through the body and stimulates nerves in that area, causing the body to release endorphins. These endorpins are the body's natural pain killers.
(ii) Occasional rashes have been reported with the use of magnetic therapy.
(iii) Magnetic therapy should never be used on a person who has a cardiac pacemaker or defibrillator because magnets interface with these devices. It is also not recommended for persons who have a history of epilepsy. It should also not be used during pregnancy.
