A body travels from A to B at 40 ms^(-1)...

A body travels from `A to B` at `40 ms^(-1)`. And from `B to A` at 60 ms^(-1)`. Calculate the average speed and average velocity.

Text Solution

Let (x) be the distance betwwen (A) and (B) .
total time taken by a body in going from (A) to (B) and then from (B) to (A) is ltbRgt ` t_1 + t_2 = ( AB)/(40) + (BA)/(60) = AB [ 1 /( 40 ) + 1/( 60) = ( AB) / ( 24) = x/( 24) s`
Total distance coverd, ` S= x + = 2 x`
Average speed ` = S/( t_1 + t_2) = ( 2 x)/( x// 24) = 48 ms^(-1)` Displacement of the body is going from ` A` and ` B` and then from ( B) to (A) is zero , since the final lociation of body coincides with the initial location.
:. Average velocity = ( displacemeent )/( t_1 t_2) = 0/( t_1 + t_2 ) = 0` .
